hold up!

Help?

Really incredibly random, sorry:

I've had this quote stuck in my head for a frickin' week, and I can't for the life of me remember where it's from.  It's either a movie or a TV series (I think a movie) - some guy is telling someone else something helpful, yes I know.  The part I remember is "Man, if you seen this shit," and his voice cracks on the shit.

Anyone?  I know I'm not making this up...

Coach draws heat for QB's record

I don't normally follow sports - I watch football usually only when my dad or grandpa have it on, or the Superbowl.  Otherwise I really only watch the Olympics.  But I read through the articles mostly because I was bored and was amused at the comparison.  In one case, a team demonstrates "class and character" by not running up the score and was applauded for it by everyone, and in another case a team won with "class and dignity" according to the losing team but is being scolded for not having demonstrated sportsmanship by everyone else.

I understand that class, character, dignity and sportsmanship are big deals amongst schools, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing.  But reading those articles also made me think about Charles J Sykes' "50 Rules that Kids Won't Learn in School," specifically Rule 1:  Life is not fair - get used to it.

world-building

Observations of a Bored Teller (18)

Murray left last night for Glorietta.  She'll get back late Saturday night, finish packing on Sunday, and fly out to Mexico for six months on Monday.  LVA will finish packing and leave on Wednesday, and then I'll have the room completely to myself.

I've already started moving a few things in, namely clothes.  That in and of itself is a huge relief - that I have some place to put my clothes. I don't feel quite as disorganized and scattered (and hence stressed) now that I know where I can go to find what I'll be wearing that day.  All of the rest of my stuff is still in boxes by the front door, but most of that doesn't matter as much.  So long as I have and can find clothes.

One of the boxes I did dig into earlier today was my photo box.  I've got hundreds of photos still just sitting in the envelopes they came in, and now that I have a functional printer/scanner, I thought I should probably start getting them put onto the computer, then filed in an actual photo album.  I didn't get nearly as far into this project as I wanted before something made me think of the community [info]caer_awen , curious as to whether it was still active.  So I dropped by and saw that they had just shy of 400 prompts, then spent the next hour or so typing them into a Word document I could print out and take with me when I went to school.

As a result, I've got about thirty or forty snippets I'd like to maybe write at some point, plus I've started thinking about maybe making a 3D map of my universe to get a better idea of borders and where skirmishes and battles would've taken place.  I have an idea about how I'd make it, but it's a little more involved than I have time for at the moment.  It'll be really nifty, though.  But not the only map I'd need, alas - I'll also need basic maps of all the key galaxies, globes of the various key planets, maps of key locations...you get the picture.

I also need to sit down and bang out a classification system of sorts for planets and stars and start figuring out what all fits where.  It will probably end up being very similar to Star Trek's set of classifications, but what I first want to do is see if there's a similar set-up in RL that I can base it against.

And then I need to get onto paper at least a basic image of every species I plan to use, from Devonians to Jetak'ni to the Gel'ne'datte.  At the very least I'd like to have a minimum of ten species for each of the main polities, though I'd love to have more.  How many do I have thus far, come to think of it...?

-Devonian
-Heron
-Sheook
-Jetak'ni
-Kazukan
-Kauyetti
-Prudian
-Gel'ne'datte
-Tsu
-Timal/Timaui
-Brogay
-Zhazeens
-Fult-nyaik
-Doughti

...So I've got a little ways to go.  I need to go dig up my notes for the defunct Denlings story - I've got tons of species listed there.  I can work with that.

So what does it tell you that my world-building to-do list is almost three times as long as my writing to-dolist?

Cache-clearing...

...of a sort. I hear or think up some really random things, and scribble them down with the vague idea of maybe possibly finding some place to use them in the future, but I never do come back to them. So when I clean my room - really clean it, like, go through every paper in my room and say keep? shred? toss? - I keep coming across tiny snippets that I wrote down and I have no idea what they're about or for or whatever. But I don't really want to throw them away yet, and my documents on Word are getting confusing, so I thought, why not just throw them up on LJ? If nothing else, maybe someone else will get an idea and run with it, I don't know.

So consider anything in this post up for grabs. Just drop me a line and let me know if you snagged an idea, a whole concept, a sentence, whatever. Maybe let me see the finished product?

Experimenting with HTML

WARNING: do not expect this post to make any real sense.

Question: For those of you who are HTML literate, what does < div dir = "ltr" > do? Or < div dir= "ltr" > < /div >? I keep seeing it when I go to edit my entries and switch to HTML,but I can't figure out if it's a line break (a la hitting "enter" a couple times) or if it's something else entirely.
I know how to insert a weblink, at the very least.see me learn! )

An example of the HTML question above that's driving me crazy that I can't figure it out:

< div dir="ltr" >Then I have weeks like this one where I was sick over the weekend...on top of sneezing, coughing, stuffy/bloody noses and nausea and no sleep.< /div > < /div > < /div > < div dir="ltr" > < /div > < div dir="ltr" > < /div > < div dir="ltr" Fun fun.< /div > < div dir="ltr" > < /div > < div dir="ltr" >So in my copious spare time,

Let's see how this looks, shall we?

Observations of a Bored Teller (17)

So I'll be twenty-one in a couple weeks.  Not quite sure what I think about that.

Aside from the wacky dream I had last night, at least.  In my dream, for whatever reason, all of my family was out of town, I was on vacation so all of  my co-workers were at the branch, and all of my other friends were either sick or spending time with their family.  So for my birthday I took myself to a bar and had some drink - I think it was a martini or marguerita or something.  While I was there, I met a guy and spent four hours talking to him (bear in mind, that first drink was the only one I had that entire night!) about life, family and my plans for both.  He didn't want to talk about himself aside to mention that he travels a lot and tomorrow - in the dream, which would be Saturday - would be his last day in Vegas - I apparently didn't think anything about it in the dream.

But then he randomly proposed, and when I asked why, he gave valid (to my brain at the time) reasons.  There were several, but the only one I really remember now is that I want sixteen kids because I come from a huge family, and my cousin is the only child of an only child of an only child and I'm never going to do that to my children; he's an only child himself and thought that would be awesome - plus he's in a position to financially support that many munchkins.

Once I computed that - and still rather convinced he was playing a prank - I told him that, pretending we're both being serious, let's lay down some ground conditions.  There were several I would pay my own debts, and this would not be a case of "what happens in Vegas, stays" - I'd be  faithful wife and would expect him to be a faithful husband, were among those I listed to which he added a couple of his own (this was all very vivid in the dream, but already starting to fade now), and we came to an agreement of sorts.  By this point I'm finally starting to take him seriously, and, seized by a demon of spontaneity, I said yes.  So he drove us to a jeweler's, bought us rings, then drove us down to a chapel and we got married.

We went back to his hotel room because I wasn't about to take him back to my apartment or my parents' house on my wedding night - bad enough I'd have to explain a husband the next day! and did the stuff you'd expect for newlyweds, and I woke up the next day (still in the dream) with a complete stranger who was apparently my husband.  Cue denial and shock and disbelief and all that jazz, plus the grudging realization that I couldn't blame it on the alcohol, since I'd been as close to stone-cold sober the night before as one could be on their 21st birthday.  I woke up first, so I thankfully got to process all of that without his most likely distracting and unhelpful input.  Needless to say, I went into extreme and extremely quiet panicky-flail mode - and sat at his computer and wrote an LJ entry about it.  o.O

And then he woke up and my dream kinda skipped over that conversation, instead moving right on to me watching him board his plane after adding him to my bank account, and realizing that, while I did know his first and last names, I had no contact information!  No email address, no snail mail address, no phone number - nor did he have mine, and he didn't know when he'd be coming back to Vegas.  So there went my husband, and I had no idea if I'd ever see him again, much less if I'd ever be able to find him on my own.  Plus we hadn't gotten around to telling my family yet.

I was in the middle of panicking again when I woke up for real.

...

My brain is a really scary place sometimes.  I have no idea what's going on with it half the time.

On a completely different subject, I'm currently on the prowl for some piano/vocal duets, a la "Between the Bars" by Chris Garneau, "Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy, "Mad World" by Gary Jules, "Effigy" by Natalie Merchant (absolutely gorgeous vid, btw), and "Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)" by Chris Rice (but more the others - this one is also accompanied by strings).  Kind of melancholy, fairly quiet...any recommendations would be appreciated!
